Ergonomics in the workplace - luxury or necessity?

"Sitting is the new smoking" - this provocative sentence sums it up perfectly. Every day, many people spend more time in an office chair than in bed. Back pain, concentration problems and general discomfort are the consequences. But is ergonomics in the workplace really necessary, or just a trend? We are convinced that ergonomic workplaces are not a luxury, but crucial for health and success.

Why ergonomics is important in the workplace

Perhaps you know the feeling: after a long day at work, your neck is sore, your back aches and your concentration wanes. Ergonomics at the workplace minimizes precisely these complaints. Ergonomics means designing your workplace so that it adapts to you - not the other way around. The result: higher productivity and fewer health problems.

Ergonomic furniture as a basis

Good ergonomics starts with your furniture. An ergonomic office chair and a height-adjustable desk form the basis for a healthy workplace. Your office chair should be height-adjustable and have a flexible backrest and armrests. The correct sitting position looks like this: Feet flat on the floor, knees at a right angle, back against the backrest.

Height-adjustable desks allow you to switch regularly between sitting and standing. This change of position improves your circulation and relieves strain on muscles and joints. A ratio of around 60 % sitting, 30 % standing and 10 % moving is recommended.

More ergonomics in the office through movement and active breaks

Ergonomics also means keeping moving regularly. Sitting for too long has a negative effect on your body. The so-called sit-stand dynamic helps here: alternate between sitting and standing every 20 to 30 minutes. Active breaks every 60 to 90 minutes also help to relieve tension and stimulate blood circulation. A short walk or simple stretching exercises at your desk are enough.

Indoor climate, light and noise - for a healthy workplace

Ergonomics in the workplace is not just about furniture and movement. Lighting conditions, room climate and noise levels also play a major role. Daylight improves your mood and concentration. Provide fresh air and keep the temperature at a pleasant 20 to 22 °C. Plants in the office help to improve the indoor climate.

Noise affects your concentration more than you think. A noise level below 55 decibels is ideal. Quiet background music or acoustic partitions help to reduce the noise.

Digital ergonomics - using screens and work equipment correctly

Your digital work equipment should also be ergonomically adjusted. Position your screen about 50 to 80 cm away at eye level. Use external monitors instead of staring at a laptop all the time. The 20-20-20 rule is helpful for your eyes: look into the distance for 20 seconds every 20 minutes.

Ergonomic keyboards and mice support a natural hand position and avoid strain. Make sure that your forearms rest comfortably and your shoulders remain relaxed.

Mental health - a holistic view of ergonomics

Ergonomics in the workplace also includes your mental health. Stress reduction, a good work-life balance and a positive working environment are crucial. Make sure you take regular breaks and design your workplace to be individual and pleasant. An ergonomic workplace takes equal account of body and mind.
